How to Get Pokémon Cards Graded: Step-by-Step Submission Guide

How to submit Pokémon cards for grading: choosing cards, picking PSA, BGS or CGC, declared value, sleeves and card savers, packing, shipping and tracking.

Submitting cards for grading is straightforward once you've done it once. This guide walks through the process for PSA, BGS or CGC. Details differ slightly by company, so always follow the grader's current instructions.

1. Choose the right cards

Only send cards that pass the break-even test: valuable, in excellent condition, with a meaningful price jump at high grades. See is it worth grading cards?.

2. Inspect each card

Under bright light, check centering, corners, edges and surface front and back (at-home condition check). Remove cards with visible flaws unless you just want them authenticated and protected.

3. Pick a grading company and service level

  • Company: compare PSA, BGS and CGC for your card's resale market (comparison).
  • Service level: based on declared value (the card's value after grading) and speed. Higher-value cards must go in higher tiers.
  • Membership: some companies require a paid membership for cheaper tiers.

4. Create the online order

Enter each card (set, number, name), declared value and service level. The grader generates a form to include in your package.

5. Prepare the cards

  • Put each card in a clean penny sleeve
  • Then into a semi-rigid card saver (like Card Saver I), which graders prefer over toploaders
  • Don't use tape on the sleeves or holders

6. Pack securely

  • Stack card savers, sandwich them between pieces of cardboard, and secure with rubber bands (not too tight)
  • Use a sturdy box with padding so nothing moves
  • Include the printed submission form

7. Ship with tracking and insurance

Use a tracked, insured service. Keep your receipt and photos of each card before shipping.

8. Track your order

The grader updates the order status as cards are received, graded and shipped. Grades often appear online before the cards arrive back.

9. Check your slabs

When they arrive, verify each cert number on the grader's website and inspect the slab for damage.

Alternatives to submitting yourself

Some card shops and group submitters send cards on your behalf, which can lower costs or help with memberships. Check their reputation and fees.

Try it on your own cards

Use Rarefolio to scan your candidates and see each card's estimated market value and an AI condition estimate, so you only send the cards that make sense. Then save the graded cards back into your collection when they return.
