Master Set Collecting: How to Complete a Pokémon Set (and Stay Sane)
What is a master set? How to plan, track and complete a Pokémon master set: regular cards, reverse holos, secret rares, promos, budget tips and checklists.

A master set is every version of every card in a set: each card in the main list, every reverse holo, every secret rare and often related promos. It's one of the most satisfying goals in collecting, and one of the most demanding.
Base set vs master set
- Set (basic set): one copy of every numbered card in the main list
- Complete set: often includes secret rares
- Master set: every card plus every variant (reverse holos, special reverse patterns, secret rares, and sometimes promos and stamped versions)
Collectors define master sets slightly differently, so decide your own rules first.
Plan before you buy
- Get a checklist for the set (many fan sites publish them)
- Decide what counts: promos? Stamped versions? Japanese?
- Estimate the cost: most of the cost usually sits in a few chase cards
- Set a budget and timeline
A cost-effective approach
- Open some packs early for the fun and the bulk of commons and reverse holos
- Trade duplicates with other collectors (trading safely)
- Buy singles for chase cards later, once prices settle (sealed vs singles)
- Buy small lots of commons/uncommons to fill gaps cheaply
Track progress
Tracking is essential: master sets can have hundreds of cards and variants. Use a checklist, spreadsheet or app. Mark each card as owned, and note condition if you care about it.
Store it well
A master set fits beautifully in a dedicated binder, in number order. Use side-loading pages and leave spaces for missing cards (card storage guide).
Choosing a set
- Smaller special sets are more achievable
- Sets with one extremely expensive chase card can stall you at 99%
- Choose a set you love the art of; you'll be looking at it a lot
Try it on your own cards
Create a collection in Rarefolio for your master set and scan cards as you get them. Each scan shows the card number and rarity, so you can see what's in the collection, and the total value grows as you go. Pair it with a printed checklist for the full picture.
