Pokémon Set Symbols: How to Find Which Set Your Card Is From
How to identify a Pokémon card's set from its set symbol and code, where to find it on old and new cards, and why the set matters for value.

The same Pokémon can appear in dozens of sets with similar art. The set symbol is the small icon that tells them apart, and it's the second half of identifying any card (the first is the card number).
Where to find the set symbol
- Vintage WOTC cards: on the right side, just below the artwork box
- Modern cards: bottom left, next to the card number and regulation mark
Original Base Set cards have no symbol. Every other English set does.
Classic WOTC set symbols
| Set | Symbol |
|---|---|
| Base Set | none |
| Jungle | a flower |
| Fossil | a fossil skull |
| Base Set 2 | a "2" in a Poké Ball shape |
| Team Rocket | a stylized "R" |
| Gym Heroes / Gym Challenge | a gym-themed emblem |
| Neo Genesis–Neo Destiny | Neo-themed symbols |
Each later era (EX, Diamond & Pearl, HeartGold SoulSilver, Black & White, XY, Sun & Moon, Sword & Shield, Scarlet & Violet, Mega Evolution) has its own symbols per set.
Set codes on modern cards
Recent English cards also print a short set code (for example, SVI for Scarlet & Violet base, PAL for Paldea Evolved, MEW for 151). This makes searches easy: code + number = exact card.
Why the set matters
- Print run and age: older sets and short-printed sets are scarcer.
- Chase cards: some sets are famous for one card (Evolving Skies for its Umbreon VMAX alt art, Neo Genesis for Lugia).
- Reprints: Base Set art was reprinted in Base Set 2, Legendary Collection, Evolutions and Celebrations; the set symbol tells you which you have (Base Set guide).
Tips if you can't read the symbol
- Use your phone camera's zoom or a magnifier.
- Match the card number and set size (card numbers explained).
- Scan it: a card scanner identifies the set from artwork and number.
Try it on your own cards
Scan cards with Rarefolio to identify the set, number and rarity at once and see an estimated market value. Group your cards into collections by set if you're working toward completing a master set.
Frequently asked questions
How do I find out what set my Pokémon card is from?
Look for the set symbol under the art (vintage) or at the bottom left (modern), along with the card number, or scan the card with a scanner app.
Why doesn't my Pokémon card have a set symbol?
Original Base Set cards have no set symbol. Some promos and special products also lack a standard symbol.
What is a set code on a Pokémon card?
A short abbreviation of the set name printed on recent English cards, such as PAL or MEW, used with the card number to identify the card.
Does the set affect a card's value?
Yes. The same Pokémon can be worth very different amounts depending on the set, print run and rarity.
